Island Indoor Bowlers win at Potters

Two teams from our indoor league set off to compete at Potters last month. The competition format was a 2-bowl fours, also known as Rinks, Round Robin with 4 rounds. Each match lasting 12 ends or 1 hour 30 mins.

In the first team was Alan Moore, Jenny Moore, James Teare and Austin Hart. Austin had not played indoor bowls before competitively. Alan, Jenny, James and Austin won 3 matches and drew one with Alan being skip for 2 games. They also had the highest score of the week with a 48 – 0 win in a group stage game.  In the second team was Trevor Quayle, Glen Boland, Wayne Roberts and Brian Lindsay. They won all 4 games quite convincingly.

Both teams were successful in the group stage and qualified into the last 16, the format changing to 8 ends or 1 hour. Alan, Jenny, James and Austin qualified for the last 8 with Jenny taking over as skip. Unfortunately, Trevor, Glen, Wayne and Brian lost out to a team from Desborough on the last end 7-6.

The team had to play their last group match, then go on to the quarter and semi-final. In the semi-final the team beat the Desborough team that had knocked out Trevor, Glen, Wayne and Brian. On to the final and another team from Desborough to play against. The team won this match to take the win in the competition.

Alan says about the team

“I personally think it was a fantastic achievement by our team as Jenny, James and Austin all played with borrowed bowls and in two games Jenny actually moved up to play as skip and she was on fire all week. Austin had never played indoor before competitively so that was a big surprise for him to win.”

As winners they will be returning in December 2024 to compete in the champion of champions competition.
