Mixed Pairs Competition 2025/26 Conditions of Play

  1. The Laws of the Sport, Crystal Mark Fourth Edition, will apply unless otherwise stated in these Conditions of Play.
  2. Format
    Four Bowls per Player.
  3. Each match will be 1 hour and 15 minutes long. The winner will be the team with the highest number of chalks.
  4. One end tie break end if the chalks are tied, only the shot bowl can win the end.
  5. Scoring
    • First closest bowl (shot bowl) 4 chalks,
    • Second closest bowl 3 chalks,
    • Third closest bowl 2 chalks,
    • Fourth closest bowl 1 chalk.
    • Maximum 10 points per end.
  6. Setting the jack
    Team with the shot bowl (4 points) sets the jack in the next end.
  7. Equidistant Bowls
    After measuring two bowls are the same distance apart from the jack the points will be added together and then divided equally.(for example, if you are measuring for third, 2 chalks & fourth, 1 chalk then each team will receive 1.5 chalks)
  8. First to Play-Law 56.4
    At the start of the match, the opponents should toss a coin, and the winner of the toss has the option to either: place the mat and then deliver the jack and the first bowl; or tell the opposing team to place the mat and deliver the jack and the first bowl (the opposing team cannot refuse).
  9. Practice
    Players are not permitted to practice within 3 hours of the start of a match and any such practice must comply with the NSC booking regulations.
  10. Re-spotting the jack
    If a jack in motion passes completely outside the boundaries of the rink of play, or rebounds to a distance of less than 20 metres from the mat line, the end should not be declared dead. Instead, the jack should be placed with the nearest point of the jack to the mat line at the appropriate spot described as follows, and play should continue. 
    If the jack passes outside the side boundary on the right of the rink, it should be placed with the nearest point of the jack to the mat line at a spot on the rink which is 2 metres from the front ditch and 1.5 metres to the right of the centre line. 
    If the jack passes outside the side boundary on the left of the rink, it should be placed with the nearest point of the jack to the mat line at a spot on the rink which is 2 metres from the front ditch and 1.5 metres to the left of the centre line. 
    If the jack passes above the face of the bank that is within the side boundaries of the rink of play, it should be placed with the nearest point of the jack to the mat line at a spot on the rink which is 2 metres from the front ditch and on the centre line. 
    If the appropriate spot is partly or completely covered by a bowl, the jack should be placed as close as possible to the covered spot, in line with that spot and the corresponding spot at the opposite end of the rink, without touching a bowl.
  11. Visiting the head  
    The lead in the Pairs may not visit the head. The skip may visit the head after their third bowl. 
  12. Seeding
    Seeding WILL NOT be used during the draw process for any competition.
  13. All touchers should be marked with spray chalk.
  14. Substitutions will be permitted, but only in exceptional circumstances and with the prior approval of the Committee. N.B. Substitutes are not permitted to play Skip.
  15. Players should be at the venue at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of their match. Any player not ready to play within 15 minutes after the official start time of their match, shall forfeit the match to their opponent(s).
