Three from three for Trevor Quayle at the championships

It has been another exciting and action-packed week at the Indoor Bowls Championships, with the spotlight turning to the Triples competition. Teams played two sets of seven ends, with a tie-break deciding any matches level after the second set.

The final, played on Friday evening, featured Trevor Quayle, Glen Boland and Wayne Roberts. Their path to the final included a dramatic quarter-final clash against Libby Andrade, Marilyn Ellison and Dee Lewis.

That match went all the way to a tie-break. On the last end, the ladies were holding three shots and looked set to secure their place in the semi-finals. However, in a decisive moment, Wayne Roberts delivered a perfectly weighted bowl that landed in front of theirs, denying them victory and sealing progression for his team.

Awaiting them in the final were Paula Garrett, Jimmy Samson and Ian Moore, who had enjoyed a smooth run, winning their earlier matches in straight sets. The final proved tense, with Quayle, Boland and Roberts taking the first set. Despite Garrett’s team battling hard, they were unable to break through, and Quayle, Boland and Roberts claimed both sets to lift the Triples Championship title.

Finals Day drew a packed gallery, with spectators eager to watch the Ladies’ and Men’s Singles finals, as well as the Doubles and a new addition this year — a Consolation competition for singles players knocked out in the first round.

The Consolation Final was contested by Glen Boland and Alan Phair. On his route to the final, Boland recorded impressive wins of 10–6 and 10–3, while Phair qualified after victories of 13–2 and 7–6.

In the final, Phair struggled to find his length as Boland steadily accumulated points. Boland maintained control throughout and secured the win to take the Consolation title.

In the Ladies’ Singles final, Dee Lewis faced Paula Garrett. Garrett made a superb start, collecting four shots on the opening end. Lewis responded well and gradually worked her way back into contention. By the sixth end, the match was finely balanced at six shots apiece.

From there, the tension mounted as both players demonstrated exceptional accuracy. However, Garrett managed to edge ahead in the closing stages, maintaining her composure to secure the title.

On the neighbouring rink, the Men’s Singles final saw Trevor Quayle take on Andy Dixon. points were hard to come by due to the remarkable accuracy of both players. After six ends, the scores were level, reflecting the high quality of play. Dixon could not find a way to add to his total as Quayle extended his lead. As the final few ends were played Quayle added to his score and the match ended 15-9, Quayle taking the win and the title.

Quayle returned from a short break to partner Wayne Roberts in pursuit of his third title of the championships. They faced Alan Moore and James Teare, who had battled through the earlier rounds and edged a tense semi-final tie-break against John Kewley and Andy Dixon.

In a closely contested final, neither pair managed to dominate early scoring. Quayle and Roberts claimed the first set 9–4, while Moore and Teare responded by taking a tighter second set 4–3. The match was ultimately decided in a tie-break, where Quayle and Roberts secured victory and the Pairs Championship title.
